Wow - I, too, studied with Sensei Miki and Mary in Omaha from about 1980-1982 and echo all the same. The brief experience altered my life and I remain indebted to both of them still. I just heard from (now) Shihan (and Doctor) Mary who is very active teaching and healing in Vacaville, CA.

The list of Farmers Markets above contains markets that are no longer operating and does not contain all of the markets that do operate in the Tucson area. A bit of fact checking seems appropriate here, before you have folks going to markets that don't exist.

I have for years made oatmeal cookies with coconut. I used the recipe on the Quaker oat meal box and it calls for Cinnamon so I'm thinking nutmeg is a nice change. A friend gave us a bag of these little gems and naturally I had go do hunting as my hubby is crazy about oatmeal cookies and these are quite good. Instead of raisins I have used dates as my kids don't like raisins. and the pecans are a nice change form the traditional walnuts.

I don't yet have hot showers, but I will again. Saturday night, there will be a little home-spa celebration, complete with toenail polish and fluffy towels. But for tonight I'm hitting the Washburn gym. The campus staff don't have free access, but I emailed the head of the place to ask if I could shower there once and she agreed immediately. Working on a campus continues to rock.

It's always disconcerting when the professionals are shocked and alarmed, huh?

It's such a good thing that God protects fools and madmen.

Thanks so much for your recipe. I just discovered it and promptly went shopping for the ingredients. I live in a small town and cannot find "unsweetened" coconut flakes. Have you ever used sweetened coconut flakes and, if so, do you adjust the amount of brown sugar? Thanks so much again and I look forward to being able to get my Druid Circles fix without making a 60-mile round trip trek to the closest Trader Joe's.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth

Oh yes... thank god... I too decided to go on a web hunt for a 'similar' recipe for the Druids. I was hoping to avoid the Palm Shortening, which is why, I believe anyway, these little gems go bad so fast. And, thankfully, you've done it! Can't wait to try making these on some cool, lazy afternoon.

I'm intrigued by the idea of using pecans. I prefer pecans to walnuts... and I bet they will make these cookies even tastier.

Thanks!

Hi X, I have just made a batch of your chai marsala and was thrilled!!
I am in a rural community in Australia and getting Chai here is an effort, trust me, so having found your recipe I was just so chuffed. It tasted so good!!
Over here a "Chai" culture is just emerging and a bit of experimenting with blends is happening.
One of the current trends is Chocolate Chai:make your Chai as you mentioned then add 1-2 teaspoons of pure cocoa per cup. Which is just so luscious!! And I tried it with your blend and it was fantastic!!
Blessings

Thank you for the "adaptation" series of entries on your hearing aids purchase. I have been on a similar journey. I didn't think I'd ever get used to the astonishingly loud crinkle of paper, but now I don't (alas) even notice it. I spent hours crunching and rubbing sheets together, listening to the sounds that I had no idea even existed, totally amazed that this was "normal" sound. Trying hard not to flinch as each car passed me on the sidewalk. Trying not to be distracted by the insanely loud ticking of (previously totally silent) clocks on the wall (how can people THINK with such a racket going on?). You describe many of the events that I recall now, only after reading your blog entries.
I still can't sing (though I haven't really tried; I'm scarred for life from past efforts), and I'm told that I still speak softly. When I first got my aids, nobody could hear me speak, same experience as you. I felt like I had to practically shout to have people understand me; what, is everyone deaf? ;) I have acclimatised. I miss that novelty of the entirely new sound, but I guess when it's "novel" it's not "normal" :) There are still the occasional new sounds that I don't recognise and someone has to tell me what I'm hearing. I realise it's a while, now, since you wrote these entries, but I thought I'd say "thanks" anyway, for the enjoyable read!

I hate to post this, but I just saw the slideshow for the first time today, was completely enchanted, and then did some background research.... when I found the following that I am cutting and pasting. Florida Today Article....May 30, 2007

"Robert Grover's heart sank Wednesday as he drove past one of the sandhill cranes that he and dozens of others had been photographing and observing for weeks.

The adult crane lay dead near its nest on Interlachen Road in Suntree.
"It looks pretty obvious it was hit by a car, it was right by the roadside," Grover said.

He spotted the dead crane's mate near the nest. The pair's chick has been missing for two weeks. People along Interlachen and nearby roads had treated the crane couple and their hatchling like celebrities, ever since the birds built their nest in a high-traffic area over the shallow, mucky edge of the pond more than a month ago.

Some days, as many as 30 people gathered to admire and photograph the cranes as the female sat on the eggs and the male stood guard. Cranes generally lay two eggs, but usually only one chick survives. The cranes seemed to revel in all the attention. The birds waltzed by houses surrounding the pond, foraged for roots and insects and made dogs bark. Usually, the fuzzy, brown chick could be seen hobbling close behind.
Grover suspects a predator may have gotten the Suntree chick. "It was doing great and the parents were so doting," he said. "Everybody's been talking about what happened to the chick."

It's against the law to feed, molest, capture, sell, hurt, kill or steal their eggs or nests, because sandhill cranes are a threatened species protected by state law.
About 5,000 cranes live statewide"

It makes me feel sick to my stomach.
